Handy helpers

Handy helpers provide limited assistance with home maintenance tasks and heavy duty cleaning.

What are handy helpers?

The handy helpers program provides assistance with household maintenance tasks.  The service is not intended to be ongoing.

This includes:

  • Replacing light bulbs
  • Replacing door locks and window catches
  • Replacing sink faucet washers or faucets
  • Installing screens and storm windows
  • Installing weather stripping around doors
  • Caulking windows
  • Repairing furniture
  • Installing window shades and curtain rods
  • Heavy-duty cleaning, limited to:
    • Cleaning appliances 
    • Cleaning carpets and rugs
    • Scrubbing floors
    • Washing walls
    • Cleaning interior windows (that do not require a ladder to reach)
  • Pest control - general (does not include bed bugs)
  • Pest control - rodent (rats and mice)
  • Installing safety devices – to increase home safety for seniors with memory issues

Handy helpers cannot:

  • Clean an entire home
  • Paint
  • Complete home repairs not listed above
  • Come on a regular basis

Seasonal services available:

Spring yard clean up: 

  • Washing exterior windows
  • Leaf raking
  • Cleaning flowers beds
  • Trimming overhanging tree branches (that can be reached safely from the ground)

Fall yard clean up:

  • Washing exterior windows
  • Leaf raking

Availability of seasonal services is weather dependent. 

  • Spring yard clean up will be available April through September
  • Fall yard clean up will be available October through December

Seasonal services utilize volunteer assistance; service will be dependent on volunteer availability.

Application for service must be returned to complete request for service.

Volunteer information

Seasonal yard clean up is provided by volunteers.  This is a opportunity for individuals or small groups to volunteer.

Who is eligible?

This service is available for:

  • Macomb County resident
  • Age 60 years and older

*There may be limitations to services provided in rental properties or multifamily dwellings. For example, we are not able to provide pest control service at an apartment complex.

How to apply:

Call to complete an intake

Call the Office of Senior Services to complete an intake at 586-469-5228.  The intake will collect demographic information and identify the assistance needed.

A home visit will be scheduled

Intakes will be assigned to a home maintenance technician who will call to schedule an appointment to come to the home.

The program is currently running a waitlist.

What is the cost?

The program requests a donation based on the service provided.  A summary will be mailed the following month with a suggested contribution.
