What is safe at home?
The program aims to reduce injuries in older adults and increase safety. This is done by installing:
- Safety devices that can prevent a fall that may result in a debilitating injury or reduce independence
- Life-saving devices such as smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
- Accessibility devices
This includes improving the safety in the bathroom, while using the stairs within or exiting their home.
This is achieved through a professional and comprehensive safety assessment of the home performed by the home maintenance technician. They evaluate for not only safety devices but other services that would help make the home safer. Devices are installed the same day.
Who is eligible?
This service is available for:
- Macomb County resident
- Age 60 years and older
*There may be limitations to installation of devices in rental properties.
How to apply:

Call to complete an intake
Call the Office of Senior Services to complete an intake at 586-469-5228. The intake will collect demographic information and identify the assistance needed.

A home visit will be scheduled
Intakes will be assigned to a home maintenance technician who will call to schedule an appointment to come to the home.
The program is currently running a waitlist.
What is the cost?
The program requests a donation based on the devices installed. A summary will be mailed the following month with a suggested contribution.
